Reading Folders
Your child will have an assigned reading folder. THIS FOLDER IS VERY IMPORTANT! Please do not lose or destroy this folder. This folder will contain a daily behavior chart with happy/sad faces that a parent must sign everyday. The reading log portion of the folder must be filled out nightly and signed by the student and the parent. This portion of the folder is a reading homework grade. Every part of the log is worth one part nightly. If one part isn’t filed out, it will be highlighted through and one point deducted. This includes the part where the reading homework is to be filled out (the log), parent’s signature, and student’s signature. I will go back through the folder at the end of the 6 weeks and total up for the reading folder homework grade. PLEASE CHECK THE FOLDER DAILY FOR ANY NOTES/RESPONSES FROM THE TEACHER OR ANY SCHOOL NOTES. PLEASE SEND ALL HOMEWORK AND PARENTAL NOTES IN THIS FOLDER. I check the folders every morning! Please do not take anything out of the folder unless it is in the pockets.
There are several sections of the folder:
1. The folder pocket is for any notes I send or parents need to send to me.
2. The reading log. This is where the reading assignments (homework) are to be filled out by the parent, not student. The parent and student must sign the back of the log page every night! Also, a grading policy and other helpful first grade information will be here. A weekly homework schedule will explain all reading assignments and other homework assignments.
3. The daily behavior chart (happy/sad faces). This chart will let the parents know if there have been any behavior problems that day and this is a great place to jot a quick not to the parent and for the parent to write the teacher a note.
4. Spelling, sight an vocabulary words for the entire school year. Please be sure to follow the weekly homework schedule you’ll receive so to be sure your child is studying the correct words.
5. Weekly reading assignments (fluency passages). Please follow weekly reading homework schedule to be sure student is reading correct passage. Passages for the entire 6 week period will be in this section.
6. Parental help section that explain some of the phonemic rules to your child will learning this year. Also important statistics and helpful strategies pertaining to your child’s success! Research says that a first grader needs to read at least 30 minutes nightly.
7. The back pocket is for all homework to be returned (math, grammar, etc).
